Did you know our property was originally built in 1793? Quite fascinating, don’t you think? 

We pay tribute to Klaus Schnack, Master Goldsmith and former owner of the iconic Paarl GEELHUIS, by sharing his perspective on the history of 469 Main Road:

"The land on which this building stands was originally part of the Farm Optenhorst in 1792. At that time, we believe the front thatched-roof house was constructed as a longhouse.

In 1854, the dining room and kitchen, complete with a fireplace and a front-facing gable, were added, transforming the structure into a typical Cape Dutch T-shaped building. During the Victorian era, the interior layout was also modified, with the eight-panel doors becoming a hallmark of that period. These doors are notably taller than the earlier Yellow-and-Blackwood doors, reflecting the increase in average height over time.

The exact date when the tin-roofed section was added remains uncertain, as does the history of the entrance that now stands out prominently. Over the years, both buildings were occupied by various parties. The cottage at the back was originally thatched but later had its roof replaced with tin. To the left of the building stood the Remise, and to the right, the wine cellar with its concrete wine tanks. The houses were originally built on a 1.5-meter-wide boulder foundation, with 50 cm-thick walls made of sun-dried mud bricks."
