Did you know our property was originally built in 1793? Quite fascinating, don’t you think? Let us share the story with you."

The HISTORY of 469 Main Street Paarl:

The ground on which this building stands was deduced from the Farm Optenhorst in 1792. We believe that, at that time, the front thatched-roof house was built as a long house.

Only in 1854 were the dining room and kitchen with the fireplace added, with the gable at the front, to create a typical Cape Dutch T-shaped building. The interior layout was also changed in the Victorian era. The eight-panel doors are typical for that time. They are also higher than the old Yellow-and-Blackwood doors, as people grew taller over time.

We are not sure when the tin roof part was added or if there was once an entrance where it now appears quite prominently. Both buildings were occupied by different parties from time to time. The cottage at the back was originally built with a thatched roof, which was later replaced by a tin roof. On the left of the building was the Remise; on the right, the wine cellar with concrete wine tanks. The houses at that time were built on a 1.5-meter-wide boulder foundation, with 50 cm outside walls made of sun-dried mud bricks.

Paarl Boutique Hotel, owned by Jandre Arangies and Janet van der Merwe, features 10, (soon 18) elegant guest rooms, a cozy communal lounge, and the Vida E Café breakfast room and eatery.
